Messiah Lutheran Church in Portland was formed when a group of Finnish immigrants decided unanimously at a meeting on September 7, 1902 to organize a congregation. For many years the activities were strongly Finnish. Little by little the horizons broadened and the main language of activities was changed to English. The congregation has owned three buildings. Eric Heikkala was born on April 24, 1916 in Hailuoto, Finland, which is located on an island between Sweden and Finland near Oulu in the north. His parents were Viljo Heikkala and Fanny Sipila, and Eric was the eldest of five children.
